Signs of Mange in Dogs

   Cat and dog itchy skin can sometimes be because of mange. Both dogs and cats that are affected by mites may start Mange in cats is caused by mites. Your cat will itch and scratch as the mites burrow into their skin.

Cat mange is caused by Notoedres cati mites. These mites can be transferred to dogs in your home but they aren't usually the cause of mange in dogs.


If your cat is affected by mange, itching isn't the only sign that you'll notice. There may also be hair loss around their shoulders and head. You may also notice swelling in these areas. You can take your cat to the vet so they can be tested for mange.

   Both Demodex mites and Sarcoptes mites can cause mange on dogs. There are three species of mites that can commonly be found on dogs.


These are:

Sarcoptes mites

Demodex mites

Ear mites


Demodex mites can what is known as demodectic mange. Sarcoptes mites cause sarcoptic mange.
